DFFS - The ENVISAT Data Flow and Format Simulator

!!!! This page is under construction; information herein may be wrong, incomplete or both.

The ENVISAT Data Flow and Format Simulator (DFFS) serves to simulate the chain from onboard generation of ENVISAT instrument measurement data to ground reception of down-link data (100Mb/s). The primary purpose of the DFFS is to provide data suitable for testing of the ground processing facilities. However, the DFFS is itself capable of interpreting and evaluating such data, whether produced by the DFFS itself or emanating from an external source. In addition to providing its own data exchange formats, the DFFS is able to produce and accept data in Level 0 product and FRED tape archive formats, and can thus be used in many different validation contexts.

The ENVISAT mission is developed by the European Space Agency.

The DFFS was developed by TERMA Elektronik AS (formerly CRI A/S) under a contract for Dornier Satellitensysteme GmbH who was the primary initial user. Since, the DFFS has been extended and used in a number of ENVISAT activities and is currently being deployed at TERMA for production of the PDS V3 Satellite to Ground test data to be used for ground segment qualification.

The DFFS has but limited knowledge about the ENVISAT mission. The identity and details of the payload instruments are all given by a set of configuration files, which could be rewritten to fit other missions with similar technological profiles.

The DFFS system: SW and documentation, may be downloaded from the DFFS Store and on-line man pages may be viewed. These links are protected by userid and passwd. To obtain access, please contact dffs@terma.com.
