CLIMAP

Climate and Environment Monitoring with GPS Atmospheric Profiling

EU Environment and Climate Programme Project PL 970695

Project Summary

As part of the Environmental and Climate Programme of the CEC, TERMA Elektronik A/S has initiated the CLIMAP project, CEC ref. PL-970695, to be conducted together with the Danish, the Dutch and the UK Meteorological Offices and IEEC from Barcelona.

CLIMAP is funded by the CEC and has a duration of 30 months. It started in December 1997 and is expected to finish in June 2000. TERMA is project manager.

The objective of the project is to perform retrieval, analysis, and quality control of satellite atmospheric profiling observations, to such a degree that they can be made available on a pre-operational basis to data assimilation into climate and NWP models and to general user groups.

More, specifically, the proposed project has as objectives to develop and install a data processing/data distribution system which will process GPS occultation based atmospheric measurements from the Danish Ørsted Satellite, together with ground-based GPS measured humidity and advanced AVHRR/TOVS profiles, and distribute the data on a semi-operational basis to accredited user groups associated with the Global Climate Observation System (GCOS) and World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).

It is furthermore the objective to validate the system in a comprehensive manner, analyze the contributions from the different data sources, and make recommendations about the most efficient usage.

Finally the project will develop a concept for a fully operational system to provide services to the climate and environment monitoring communities at large, including the European Environmental Agency’s Topic Center for Air Quality.

The CLIMAP project is funded by the European Commission through its Environment and Climate Programme. The project is carried out by a consortium consisting of Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), Consejo Superior de Investigationes Cientificas (IEEC), TERMA Elektronik A/S (Project Coordinator) and UK Meteorological Office (UKMO).
