Help on Search
This document provides a short users guide on how to use the
search capabilities of MADAMs Query Web.
The different query pages contains elements of the following types:
There are two types of Text input fields Dates
and Others.
Dates
You can specify the start and the end date of your selection. These
dates can take two forms: DD-MM-YYYY or DD-MM, where
DD is the day (two digits), MM the month and YYYY
the year. Here are two Examples:
03-JAN-1968
15-FEB
If you don't specify the year (in both dates), then the selection will
correspond to the interannual cycle included between the given
dates. For example, let's say that you would like to study the vernal
period. So you could specify as start and end time as these: 01-FEB and
01-JUN.
Other Text input fields
Other text input files can be used to specify a string which the system will
use in the search. The text typed in the input field must match
the full field which you are looking for, otherwise you must use
wildcards. With wildcards you can specify a part of the text which
you want to look for e.g. if you want to look for a person with a
name like Hendrick Henrick or Henrik and you have forgotten his
sir name you can type :
The % sign will match all characters including blanks.
You are adviced always to use the % sign at the end of text
input fields to match any blanks which may be included in
the database.
Three types of Selection lists can be found on the query pages:
Single Selection Lists as a menu
The current selected value is A to see other elements in the
list and/or to change the value from A to say C. Move
the mouse pointer to the box surounding the A and click you
left mouse key. You will now see a list of the available values, to
select C simply move your mouse pointer to the C and
click your left mouse key. C is now the selected value and
will be used in the search.
Single Selection List as window
The list is now presented in a small window possible with a scrollbar to
the right of the window. Sometimes one of the elements in the list will
be displayed on a black background, which means that the element is selected.
Another element can be selected by moving the mouse pointer to one of
the displayed elements and click on the left mouse key. The previously
selected element will be deselected and the new element will be selected
i.e. the background is now black. To deselect an element move the mouse
pointer to the selected element and clik on the left mouse key. The
background will now change from black to the normal background color.
The scrollbar on the right side of the window can be moved up or down
to see other list elements. To see the other elements in the list
move the mouse pointer to the scroolbar and press and hold down the left
mouse key now drag the mouse down or up to see the other elements in the
list. It is also possible to two arrows on the scroolbar to move the
list up or down. Move the mouse pointer to e.g. the arrow at the bottom
of the scrollbar and clik on the left mouse key. The list will now move
one element down.
Multiple Selection List
The only difference between a Muliple selection list and a single
selection list is what the name says a Multiple selection list
can be used to select more than one element where as in a Single
selection list only one element can be selected at the same time.
The map selection contains an image of the Mediterranean Sea where
you are able to select a rectangle of a geographical area in which
you want to search for data.
To select a rectangle you must move the mouse pointer to the
lower left corner of the rectangle you which to select and
click on your left mouse key. You will now receive a new page
with the image of the Mediterranean Sea and the corner which
you have just selected is maked with a red cros. If you misplaced
the cross choose back in your browser and select the corner again.
Now select the other corner of the rectangle by moving the mouse
pointer to the upper right corner of the rectangle and click the left
mouse key. You will now see a new page with the selected rectangle
drawn in red. Accept the rectangle or use the browsers back
function to go back to the previous page.
